INTEGRITY

THE TESTIMONY OF INTEGRITY embodies Friends' devotion to truth, honesty, authenticity and wholeness, honoring the Inner Light in each individual. This testimony lies at the heart of Quaker practice and guides Friends in both their spiritual and daily lives. Thus, the testimony of integrity serves as the basis of the other testimonies. Integrity asks us to place our attention on who we truly are, using this understanding to guide our actions.

At Friends Seminary, we strive to be authentic in our interactions with others, to be one with our word, and to allow the Inner Light to be our guide. The challenge of questioning ourselves—of acting and living with integrity—creates a dynamic community where students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and friends examine their lives and their actions in that Light.

What does integrity do for me as an individual and why is it valuable? How has my sense of integrity changed?

How can the meaning of integrity change in different situations and different cultures?

Do I hold myself to a high level of integrity within myself, or am I held to a high level of integrity by outside consequences?

GEORGE FOX, STATEMENT OF 1656,
from The Works of George Fox (1831)

“Be patterns, be examples in all countries, places, islands, nations, wherever you come.”

PARKER J. PALMER, 2000

"Our deepest calling is to grow into our authentic selfhood, whether or not it conforms to some image of who we ought to be. As we do so, we will not only find the joy that every human being seeks—we will also find our path of authentic service to the world."

WILMER A. COOPER
The Testimony of Integrity (1991)

"Our outward lives bear witness to the truth discerned inwardly."
